2022 AGC Excellence Winner

2022 AGC Excellence Winner

The 2022 Associated General Contractors of Alaska Excellence in Construction Awards were announced on Friday, November 11, 2022.

ChemTrack Alaska, Inc.’s, King Salmon Air Station Aircraft Arresting System, took home the trophy for Meeting the Challenge of a Job, Under $5,000,000 Transportation, Marine, Heavy, Earthmoving.

A HUGE THANKS to all of our team who made this project a success!

ChemTrack Alaska, Inc. refurbished the King Salmon Aircraft Arresting System (AAS) in the remote Alaska Bristol Bay fishing town of King Salmon. What is an AAS? Aircraft Arresting Systems serve primarily to save lives by preventing aircraft from overrunning runways in cases where the pilot is unable to stop the aircraft during landing or aborted takeoff operations.

ChemTrack worked on four existing barrier pits that house two pairs of BAK-12 AAS. While the BAK-12s and barrier pits are government property, the airfield is operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) under regulations of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Multiple agency coordination was necessary for general work scheduling, airport closures, dig permits, security badging, airfield badging and confined space work plans.  ChemTrack’s contract included structural design, precision demolition to avoid damaging the existing key structural components, complex concrete pours, civil/site work, and electrical design and construction.

The final site construction sequence included a planned 65-hour closure event for the airport and included placement of 16 Arrestor Cable Hold Downs into the airstrip surface. ChemTrack worked simultaneously at both ends of the runway to sawcut asphalt, augur and remove soil, install rebar cages, place concrete, install hold down bolts, hand trowel to 1/8 inch below grade, and cover with blankets for curing.

Despite the many project challenges, ChemTrack safely refurbished the King Salmon AAS without impeding the busy air traffic of this regional hub and fishing mecca.

The Parker, Smith & Feek Excellence in Construction Awards are given in recognition of exceptional projects. Companies are judged against the others in its category by independent industry professionals.

Successs

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!
